Shrove Tuesday is the last day of the liturgical calendar before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is the same day as Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday. Lent marks a period when many Christians traditionally fasted, so instead of wasting rich food ingredients like fat and sugar, they would use them up.
Pancakes are a popular dish that dates back centuries, with recipes dating back to 1439. Since pancakes use sugar and fats, they are an apt choice to use them up before fasting begins.
So on Shrove Tuesday, we celebrate that Lent is about, to begin with, a delicious meal of Pancakes.
